Our History
Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary was founded by Engineer Lino R. Chávez Gonzales and his son, Dante Chávez Álvarez, on July 17, 2007. Their goal was to protect endangered wildlife, especially the Andean condor. Both founders shared a deep commitment to nature and recognized the urgent need to rescue and conserve these majestic birds and other native species.
Since its foundation, the sanctuary has worked to rescue and rehabilitate Andean condors and other wild animals affected by illegal trafficking, captivity, and human mistreatment. Some rehabilitated condors have been released with satellite GPS transmitters, allowing their movements to be monitored and their behavior in the wild to be studied.
Cochahuasi also plays an important role in environmental education. Through guided visits and educational activities, visitors learn about wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, conservation, and the importance of protecting Peru’s biodiversity.
The sanctuary’s long-term vision includes supporting the conservation and reproduction of the Andean condor and providing appropriate care for rescued wildlife. Its history reflects the dedication of its founders, collaborators, and supporters to the protection of Peru’s natural heritage.
